When i got the EE i promised my wife I would not do anything that would turn
this into another devices i am cussing up a storm over whilst i try to get
obscure drivers and broken packges wedged into working. So for the first few
hours I used the Easy Mode interface that comes turned on ...Then i found a
simple seet of 4 steps to turn on the Advanced Mode. This mode gives you a
real desktop, kde flavored and all...tthen while getting the ofccial updates
found a way to add a few eee centric repositories to add some goodies,..a
few hour latter i was grabbing .debs and running them with dpkg..how pre
aptget:)-

Ok so now i have a very usefull linux computer that looks a lot like my
other more fully blown rigs. Skype is reved up to 2.x so I have the cam
support i have xxchat, cgoban and a slew of java apps loaded up (gota love
webstart)..and man is this sweeet

Except...its still Xandros base. Why is this bad? Get ready to bitch me out
for being  an idealist fool Jeff, but i found out thru some bumping around
the Xandros sitee that hey paid the MS  Guilt Money...what a  crew of
moroooons. That Xandros will be scrubbed from this device is not an if but a
when. What to replace it with?

UbuntuEEE..yep there is a hardy band of eee users who are just days away
from mputting out a final version of 8.04 worked up with all the things you
need to make the EEE work in full. Before I came across the UbuntuEEE site i
as tempted to make a distro change up but the stories of wifi driver
problems and web cam screwiness would make it hard fr me to keep the promise
I made to my wife. I have showed her the UbuntuEEE site, showed her how easy
it is to factory reset..and low I think I have her buy in for the
modification of the deal.

User experiences....They kybd does take some getting used to but once you do
its not a bad thing at all. I would find writing a novel on this to be
something i would not look forward to but if I were doing that Id siimply
slap a full blown usb kydb on it for those stretches. Other than that, this
kybd is totaly doable.

Knowing the engine i am using I have not tried to do things like Secondlife,
Bzone or other such apps. I have watched about 9 episodes of Lost on it ( a
pal of mine has finaly gotten me to invest in watching it form the start
till the now) mostly at night in bed and man this is the sweet spot device
for that sort of thing. What is a Pro/Con is that after the epsiodes are
over I can geek on atop my pillow until i literally fall alseep in mid edit
of a cfg. Knowing when to shut the lip and put it on the nighttable is
something I will learn to do.

The memory issues....well sure sd cards are all born with lifespans and as
such there are many web pages that talk to the issue of rejiggering tmp and
a few other dirs suchthat you are not r/w to the main  SD all the time. Good
thoughts that I will enact when i m ove up to UbuntuEEE

Lets see, what else..firefox is a breeze on this...armarok is the default
music app and that makes me so happy...vnc ..well even the palm could do
that but having more screen real estate makes getting into the boxes around
the house for "Daddy help i can not get mythbusters loaded" or other admin
chores so so much easier. Just this morn I was able to get the Wubcast going
for my youngsters without having to get up from my Sunday Morning religious
practice..a nice visit to the restroom for a quick run thru of the newsfeeds
and ....erm..etc etc.

Oh yea...I installed COMIX so I can read graphic novels (comic books) and
man this is the shiz. Kindle...yea yea but seriously...No the eee is not the
perfect ebook reader, but i can read books and really well. I started
reading Little Brother on it using a few differnt ebook readers to try and
see whiich is the best for me and my reading quirks..Ah chioces.
