I think that here we might be seeing more "polite silence" that gives 
religion a break.  A still-too-white-maybe media is generally loathe, 
outside of ditto-heads and their ilk, of picking on minorities or 
well-sanctioned sacred cows lest they be seen as The Man (et al).

Those with no such taboo protections get the full force with no punches 
held.  It's not fair, and it's not really serving the public, but I 
definitely see it at least some of the time.

Additionally, it is common to politely ignore comments by the most 
insane among us and just quietly wait until they fade away.  The media 
shouldn't do this with sitting government officials.
