Adam's "half my stuff" is trivially true in many states just considering the various payroll taxes.  You don't even need a remarkable income to find yourself in that situation, being a software engineer will do.

To use California as an example, since I am familiar with that case, it is not unusual that the payroll check you give an employee is smaller than the check that gets sent to the government for said employee at the same time.  My math is fuzzy, but that sounds suspiciously like "half".
