In the following limited sense, all non-inflation-adjusted "future payout" plans are scams: you pay in dollars-today for some devalued dollars-tomorrow, and hope that some kind of return on investment at least equals if not overcomes the value impact of inflation. And since no plan can guarantee ROI in equal to or in excess of inflation, they're all suspect.
The only real wealth is immutable.
