It's pretty obvious that GBit Ethernet is starting to dominate.
FTTC GBit Ethernet is already pretty widely distributed, with
the last meters covered by 10/50 MBit VDSL (higher bandwidths
to come) and FTTH, at least to the cellar. 

Technology like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_Peak
will likely to become IB killer as well as be deployed in LAN,
and potentially last mile (less than a km, probably).
