Well, facts are often relative to how well informed the audience might be.
You might be able to speak the truth about something, but if the natives
don't have the same (or similar) basic understanding you'll soon find
yourself alight at the stake. Truth won't set you free there...
Thus adjusting one's position in relation to conditions on the ground often
requires being flexible with just how much, or what, one is willing to say
about anything in particular. Facts often have little to do with it,
honesty even less.

I think people are confusing "truth" with "honesty". Speaking facts
honestly is completely different than honestly speaking your opinions.
