So it turns out that "dark energy" is really the remnant of some 
Forerunner's attempt to monetize space(-time).

It all makes sense now.... even the huge mismatch in orders of 
magnitude, which can now be explained as "irrational exuberance". Or 
possibly "inflation"*.
