If low-budget movie reboots of popular books actually had political relevance then this would have been a much more entertaining election cycle.

Every election cycle, people trot out the same "oh noes!" and prognostications about what-ifs from both parties that never come to pass. After decades of this, a rational person should be embarrassed to use a "this time it is different!" argument for the nth time. You have an unusual definition of triangulation.

Americans are "sensible" in that many dismiss threadbare political hyperbole as obviously lacking credibility. It must be confusing for those people that weave elaborate political models from the same hyperbole.
