Amazing?  Given the text-only, ascii only applications of the day that was 
typical.

Toss in a GUI and multiple languages and text systems and only 1mb would 
certainly seem remarkable.  A lot was certainly accomplished with the 
limited resources of the day, but that came with losing quite a lot of 
versatility that exists today.  That said, there's certainly a lot of bloat 
that could use some serious paring down.  The excesses of better performance 
on disk and RAM has certainly led to a lot of lazy programming compared to 
back in the day.   You kids, being able to build graphic interfaces without 
worrying about trying to get things done during the vertical refresh!
