Note that the canadians were a bit behind the curve, as IBM machines  
were famously already employed for identification of undesirables  
across the Atlantic in the 1930's.


"First they came for those with scarlet numbers* ..."


* those bearing scarlet letters would not have been positively  
identified until after a second pass (with digit sensors suppressed)  
through the sorter.
