Since my mom works at SLAC and I've had a long-standing interest in
particle physics (e.g., in eighth grade I wanted permission to paint
cloud chamber tracks on my ceiling), PEP to me means "Positron-Electron
Project" (viz http://www.slac.stanford.edu/welcome/pep.html). My mom's
currently working with the BaBar project
(http://www.slac.stanford.edu/BFROOT/doc/www/bfHome.html) - BaBar is the
detector for PEP-II
(http://www.slac.stanford.edu/accel/pepii/home.html).
